About the Author

Oliver Sacks was a neurologist, writer, and professor of medicine. Born in London in 1933, he moved to New York City in 1965, where he launched his medical career and began writing case studies of his patients. Called the “poet laureate of medicine” by The New York Times, Sacks is the author of thirteen books, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Musicophilia, and Awakenings, which inspired an Oscar-nominated film and a play by Harold Pinter. He was the recipient of many awards and honorary degrees, and was made a Commander of the British Empire in 2008 for services to medicine. He died in 2015.

I have never admired anyone as much as I do the unforgettable Dr. Sacks. I have read almost all his books but had skipped this one because, having a black thumb, botany has not been a part of my life. But I recently heard an old interview with Dr. Sacks. When asked which of his books he would most recommend for a reader who knew nothing about his works, he cited Oaxaca Journal. It does not presuppose any knowledge of the subject, and was constructed from the notebooks he kept during the trip. It is an entertaining travelogue, with "side trips" into Meso-American history, economics, and technology.

I loved this book. Who would have thought a journal about a tour in Oaxaca to see the many species of ferns would be so interesting and informative? At times it's funny; other times serious. There are great references to Mexico's history that are woven into the story without sounding like history lessons. The descriptions of place, of tastes, of sights and sounds and smells are wonderful. The author is enthusiastic about the ways in which many disciplines -- biology, botany, math, science, history, etc. -- intermingle and connect in the study of ferns or birdwatching or photography, and the enthusiasm is contagious. It is a lovely account of how a group of people who hail from many walks of life can become good friends because of a simple common interest. A great read for anyone interested in good travel writing, Oaxaca specifically and Mexico in general, or botany or birdwatching or nature. This book will not tell you where to stay or what to eat or where to purchase the best this or that. It will, however, lift your spirit and change the way you look at this part of the world, as well as the not-so-simple fern.

And I slow and relaxing read. A lot of good insights. Much introspection By the author. Rather short, it leaves me wanting to read more of his work.

A short trip through the fern society of New York and Oaxaca. Very enjoyable. The writing is light and feels like a sketch, capturing the essence of the place and the person.

This book should be mandatory reading for freshmen in high school. DO WHAT YOU LOVE. (And it doesn't have to be your job!) Love what you do. Admire folks with passion. Live a life of passion. Get weird. Enjoy others getting weird.

As usual, Oliver Sacks has written another fascinating book that I could not put down! No matter what he writes about (in this case searching for ferns with members of the American Fern Society) he is able to get the reader caught up in the subject. Highly recommended!

Read this book if you want to get caught up in an adventure that at first on the surface would seem to be an esoteric and even dull undertaking. If it strikes you this way, be prepared for a surprise.

Oliver Sacks has a huge amount of curiosity and insight. The book is not over-written, he shares his experiences about traveling with the fern society to Oaxaca very directly and although this might not sound promising, it really is.
