Although these portraits are not exactly my taste in art, as I gazed into the faces after reading the stories I felt I encountered the individuals and that my tendency to regard street people as “other†and to avoid their eyes (perhaps ashamed of my privilege and inability to help them) was healed a little.I really appreciate the author’s creativity, courage and hope in seeking out these individuals and doing his best to see them and listen to their stories. He has allowed me to feel more compassion and hope.A year ago I lost a family member who had lived many years on the streets suffering from drug addiction. I think this book helped me imagine her life and the community of people - some of them caring and wonderful - that was her world during her homeless years.Thank you, Stuart Perlman.
Stuart Perlman is a Psychotherapist, Artist and Psychoanalyst, who has been pursuing a project "on skid row", doing full portraits of various homeless people, one by one, and interviewing them for their life and story details. He artistically and compassionately has pursued humanizing these suffering neglected cast-offs of our society. This book is a quick and moving read and will show the humanity these individuals possess. The art is riveting and the project shows what a caring individual Dr. Perlman is. He is truly superb as is this product of his efforts.

You will be inspired by the stories of the homeless women and men in this book, who have overcome abuse, disrespect, and abandonment and yet, have found a way to survive. Dr. Perlman’s compassion for and dedication to these individuals shines through in the book in the artwork and most especially, in his desire to tell their story in each person’s short biography. These are stories that need to be told, especially these days, and Dr. Perlman does it eloquently. You will not want to put the book down until you see all the paintings and read all the stories. I love looking at art books, especially collections of portraits like these with so much vibrant color. But this book is so much more than just portraits! I was really blown away by the descriptions of the people's lives and what they have been through - it has given me a lot to think about. Thank you Dr. Perlman for bringing these homeless people's lives to the attention of the public.
A moving and powerful book. Beautiful, moving portraits, colors that pop out at you. I learned things I didn't know about the hardships that homeless people face.
I have been following Dr. Perlman's art work for several years, and I'm excited to see this beautiful book of his paintings of the homeless. The stories that his subjects tell about their lives are so poignant, and they remind us that life is fragile and is sometimes influenced by luck and random circumstances.
